In an exploratory cluster analysis three value chain strategies of African indigenous vegetables (AIV) are classified with strongest predictors are market integration and social capital/networks: the AIV subsistence farmers for selfconsumption, the AIV cash crop individual producers and those farmers, who market AIV and belong to a farmer group. While commercialisation is not causing loss of agrobiodiversity, the high value value chains, such as marketing AIV to retailers, are not yet promoting pro-poor growth and are hardly found. Most striking was, that sustainable intensification of production and commercialisation are not yet strongly linked.
