Empowering Rural Youth: Climate Contest Sparks Innovation in Schools

The efforts of our Rural Youth Climate Action Movement (RYCAM) project are being recognized! An article about our activities in rural schools across Indonesia has been featured in the International IKI Newsletter. This highlights the strength of our approach and the project’s potential to serve as a role model for similar initiatives.

As an activity under the RYCAM project, the Climate Action School Contest has inspired students from schools visited by the Indonesian Climate Change Alliance (ICCA) and the civil society organizations MPM and Jamtani to submit 66 innovative proposals by December 2024. From these, 32 winning proposals were selected and given the opportunity to bring their ideas to life with a grant of €300 during the implementation phase from February to July 2025.

We at the Centre for Rural Development (SLE) are proud that the RYCAM School Climate Action Contest has not only reached rural youth and schools but has also helped raise awareness among local education authorities and parents. This demonstrates that RYCAM is not just about achieving net-zero emissions on farms — it’s about empowering the next generation to become climate action leaders. By planting seeds of knowledge and action in rural schools, RYCAM is helping cultivate a more sustainable future for Indonesia.
