In order to fully understand the main concepts and problems in Indian agricultural electric energy supply, some technical background knowledge is required. This chapter, written for readers without an engineering background, describes the concepts of generation, transmission and distribution and explains how agricultural pumpsets operate. Further, the concept of a power factor and the working of capacitors are also explained.
